The choir began its life in 1947 as the Dormel Singers under the direction of its founder Dorothy Mellor.  The choir quickly established itself as Macclesfield’s foremost ladies choir.  Over the years the choir has featured many acclaimed soloists and guests including the late Roy Castle and the cellist Julian Lloyd Webber.  Dorathy Mellor retired in 1970 and the choir was renamed Mydel from the old name for Macclesfield.  Mrs Mellor was succeeded by several conductors, Sheila Kent being the most recent.  Sheila has now retired following 18 years service as musical director and the choir have been very fortunate to welcome the talented Aimee Presswood as her replacement.

Matthew – Musical Director

Matthew hails from Belfast, Northern Ireland and has recently graduated from the University of Manchester where he read music and aims to pursue musical direction/conducting and vocal performance as a career. Matthew’s passion for conducting started while still in sixth form when he founded his own chamber choir, Lux, based in Belfast, with the intention of providing a platform for passionate young singers in Northern Ireland to explore exciting and challenging repertoire in an extremely close and exposed environment. They have gone on to produce numerous extremely successful concerts across Northern Ireland in venues such as St Peter’s Cathedral, Belfast and St Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast. He was then selected in his second year of study at the University of Manchester for the prestigious choral and orchestral conducting training programme under the tutelage of Robert Guy and Mark Heron respectively. During this programme Matthew conducted a wide range of ensembles such as the Ad Solem Chamber Choir, Cosmo Choir, University of Manchester Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra. Alongside the Mydel Choir, he is currently the Musical Director of Hallam Choral Society, the Acappella Singers in Wilpshire, Staffordshire Chamber Orchestra and has musically directed a number of musical theatre productions in a wide range of locations such as Manchester, Belfast, and Dublin, working for companies such as the National Stage School of Ireland. Aside from conducting, Matthew is a keen tenor and some recent highlights include tenor soloist in works such as Haydn’s St Nicholas Mass with the University of Manchester Chorus, Handel’s Messiah with Leek Choral Society, and Mozart’s Coronation Mass with St Peter’s Cathedral Choir

Max Bilbe – Accompanist

Max studied piano and composition at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester from 2012 until 2016. He now studies music at the University of Manchester and is in his second year there. He is tutored in piano by Richard Casey and performs regularly as a soloist, accompanist and ensemble member in concerts and events around North England.
